This week President Trump told a crowd in Arizona he doesn’t think the U.S. can make a deal on the North American Free Trade Agreement modernization. He says he believes the U.S. will end up terminating NAFTA at some point. South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal says NAFTA is an important deal for U.S. agriculture and he’s hoping the President is just posturing as a negotiating tactic.
He’s hoping the President will listen to his trade negotiators on NAFTA and follow through with a successful renegotiation.
And VanderWal says the remake of NAFTA will likely set a precedent for future trade deals.
Both Mexican and Canadian officials also think Trump is trying to gain a negotiating advantage with his remarks.
