True Nebraskans is continuing its petition drive for property tax relief. The group needs 120,000 signatures by next July to place their measure on the ballot in 2020. However, they’re aiming for 160,000 signatures. Petition Drive Chairman Paul Von Behren says while they’re not releasing numbers on how many signatures they have, they’ve picked up a lot of support in rural areas.

He says they began their drive in the rural areas to contact people at fairs and rural events and now are turning toward cities.

Von Behren says over the past two decades the state legislature has failed to pass any property tax reform, but now several state senators are backing their petition for reform.

Von Behren says their petition calls for a Constitutional amendment that gives property taxpayers a 35% rebate when they file their taxes.
