This week, members of the grassroots group, TRUE Nebraskans rallied at the State Capital in Lincoln to announce their ballot drive for property tax relief. The Group’s Executive Director Paul Von Behren says their members are concerned that the Legislature has failed to pass property tax relief so now they’re appealing to the voters with the measure they’re trying to get on the 2020 ballot.
He says their ballot measure calls for a Constitutional Amendment that would allow for a rebate once property taxes are paid.
Von Behren says they have until July of next year to obtain at least 120,000 signatures to get their measure on the ballot.
TRUE Nebraska Field Director Ed Truemper says the property tax burden for some of their farmer members has been astronomical.
Von Behren says there are between 2,600 and 3,000 entities that now levy property taxes in Nebraska with the rates ranging from between 40 to 45 percent of the total tax rate.
