The U.S. Transportation Department recently approved travel to nine cities in Cuba. And a decision on routes to Havana could come late this summer. Those openings should help enhance trade to the island nation from the United States according to Iowa Corn Growers President Bob Hemsath who is a member of the engage Cuba organization.
He says Cuba is very interested in purchasing many agricultural commodities from the U.S. and he says loosening credit restrictions is what’s needed to help that.
Hemesath says his group continues to speak with members of Congress about the need to lift the trade embargo with Cuba. He’s hoping that will eventually happen.
The DOT has approved six carriers to fly to Cuba from Minneapolis St.Paul, Chicago, Philadelphia, Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
