There’s been a construction delay at the Panama Canal in the upsizing of their locks to accommodate larger ships. Officials now don’t expect to fully finish the project until the second quarter of this year. Soy Transportation Coalition Executive Director Mike Steenhoek says what’s most important is that the project get finished as it’s critical for getting U.S. soybeans down the Mississippi River and out to the Asian markets.
He says by being able to ship larger shipments on bigger ships, it’ll save money in the long run.
Steenhoek says the timing of the delay isn’t that concerning especially if they complete the project by this fall.
He expects the Canal upgrade to be finished by the fall harvest and that’s their main concern.
