The House State Affairs Committee took another run at the transportation bill today. As originally introduced, it would have raised about fifty million dollars in taxes and fees for state and local highways.
The bill has been heavily amended to cut down the two cent per year gas tax increase to three years, increase vehicle registration fees, and allow counties to increase the wheel tax up to forty eight dollars per vehicle.
Representative Don Haggar says it has taken quite some time to get here.
Representative Scott Munsterman of Brookings says it could be a better bill.
Committee Chairman, Representative Brian Gosch of Rapid City says it is a good compromise.
The bill passed out of committee on a thirteen to zero vote with a do pass recommendation. It will have to go to a conference committee to iron out differences with the Senate version.
