The Iowa Department of Transportation will release a ruling sometime this month on information from six Iowa cities that are seeking to justify their use of traffic cameras on state roadways. The D-O-T rules require cities to show the cameras are being used to improve safety – not just to collect money. D-O-T Traffic and Safety Director, Steve Gent, says without the D-O-T rules, there’s not oversight.

He says cities can install red light and speed cameras without having to dig into their budgets.

He says the review will come down to the statistics and ensure the cameras are there for the right reason.

Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Sioux City and Muscatine submitted information by the May 1st deadline seeking to justify their use of the cameras.
