Trade Promotion Authority Debate Continues

Trade Promotion Authority Debate Continues

The battle over Trade Promotion Authority continues after a cloture failed vote in the Senate earlier this week. Anti TPA groups hailed that as a victory, but by Wednesday afternoon Senate leaders reportedly reached an agreement to revive the bill.

Nebraska Farmers Union President John Hansen says his group opposes TPA. What has stalled the measure so far is the failure of the Senate to include help for displaced workers and currency manipulation.

Hansen says it’s an interesting debate with several divergent groups agreeing on their opposition to TPA.  Under the agreement reached Wednesday, the Senate will vote first on the customs and enforcement bill along with the African trade legislation which most Democrats wanted added to TPA. Following that a vote will be held on fast track legislation including the Trade Adjustment Assistance Act.
