Minnesota Milk Producers Association Executive Director Lucas Sjostrom has been attending the National Milk Producers Federation and Dairy Management Incorporated trade meeting this week. He says the group was updated by U.S. Dairy Export Council President and CEO Tom Vilsack on how dairy trade is progressing for U.S. producers. He says Southeast Asia has been showing great potential and is interested in purchasing a lot of dairy products.
He says besides milk powder, South East Asian customers are also interested in dairy products used for animal feed.
Sjostrom says there are also dairy market possibilities in the Middle East and North Africa. He says another trade pact being worked on is with the United Kingdom.
Sjostrom says one of the sticking points with the United Kingdom on dairy is similar to that with the European Union and that’s their stance on Geographical Indicators where they put a trade stamp on a product and that name can’t be used by the same product in other countries.
