Trade Issue Developing with Canada Over Dairy Product Tariff

Trade Issue Developing with Canada Over Dairy Product Tariff

An outstanding trade issue is developing between the United States and Canada regarding a U.S. milk product being exported to Canada. Chris Galen with the National Milk Producers Federation says Canada is putting a tariff on filtered milk proteins, used mostly in cheese processing.

He says Senators from New York and Wisconsin are weighing in on the issue and have contacted the USDA about it.

Galen says it’s important the Canadians be held accountable to follow the trade agreement they’ve signed with the United States. That should prevent them from imposing this trade barrier.

Besides the National Milk Producers Federation, the U.S. Dairy Export Council has joined in asking for resolution on this issue and has written to U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman about it.
