A former Japanese Agriculture Minister is part of a group of 1,000 people who have filed a lawsuit in their country aiming to halt Japan’s involvement in the Trans Pacific Partnership. National Pork Producer Council’s Vice President and Counsel for Global Government Affairs Nick Giordano says despite that, he thinks Japan will be in the TPP deal when it’s finalized.
Giordano thinks the Japanese government will be able to survive the litigation and proceed with the TPP.
Giordano says he thinks the TPP could get finalized yet this summer despite recent reports from USTR Michael Froman that the deal should be done by the end of the year.
Talks on the Trans Pacific Partnership began in 2005 and included New Zealand, Brunei, Chile and Singapore. In the past few years, the U.S. and Japan, Canada, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and Vietnam have joined in the discussions.
