The top pork countries involved in the TPP want Japan and other nations to eliminate their tariffs in a final trade agreement. Negotiators are meeting in Hanoi this week with the U.S. and Japan set to meet on Wednesday and Thursday. National Pork Producer Council’s Dave Warner says the U.S., Australia, Chile and Mexico are all telling Japan and others to come to the table by lowering those tariffs to zero.
Warner says Japan is expecting to be treated differently than other nations in the TPP and has been the main sticking point to a successful deal.
Warner says if Japan is allowed to get that special consideration it jeopardizes all future trade agreements including the Trans Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Act.
The U.S. and 11 other countries are all trying to achieve a full Trans Pacific Partnership agreement.
