U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue recently testified at a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing and talked about implementation of the 2018 farm bill. South Dakota Senator John Thune expressed concerns about the Conservation Reserve Program. He says the signup for the program needs to begin no later than this summer or acreage may go back into crop production.

He also asked the Ag Secretary if USDA could speed up the signups for CRP that are expected to be held by December 1.

Perdue says he’ll do his best to expedite the CRP process.

However, he says the changes made to the program are complex and need to be worked through.
