Freshmen Trey Carr and Jake Wieneke, along with sophomore quarterback Zach Lujan, represent the South Dakota State University football team on the 2014 Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team.
Carr, a cornerback from Omaha, Nebraska, led the Jackrabbits during the regular season with nine pass breakups and added 29 tackles (19 solo) and two interceptions. He played in all 12 regular season games and made one start. Carr also contributed on special teams, returning eight kickoffs for 208 yards (26.0 avg.) and returned an interception for a defensive extra point.
Wieneke, who earlier was named the MVFC Freshman of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection, became the first freshman in league history to top 1,000 receiving yards in a season, ending the regular season with 1,318 yards on 66 receptions with 15 touchdodowns. The Maple Grove, Minnesota, native recorded seven 100-yard games during the regular season and caught a touchdown pass in all eight league games. His 15 touchdown receptions are a single-season school record and one shy of the MVFC record. He is a finalist for Jerry Rice Award as the top freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Lujan, a transfer from Chabot College (Calif.) and a native of Anchorage, Alaska, played in nine games and started seven, leading the Jackrabbits to a 5-2 record in the absence of injured starter Austin Sumner. Lujan completed 174-of-241 passes for 1,943 yards and 13 touchdowns, topping the 300-yard mark in two contests. He averaged 217.4 yards of total offense per game.
SDSU was one of five squads to place three players on the 22-member MVFC All-Newcomer Team. Missouri State led the way with four selections.
