A third strain of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus has been detected in a Minnesota Hog Herd. University of Minnesota Assistant Professor of Veterinary Medicine Douglas Marthaler says the original strain showed up in the U.S. in April of 2013. The second Indo strain appeared in 2014 which lead up to the new strain.
Marthaler says the new strain is likely a mutation of the original strain and could be a response to increased immunity in herds.
Marthaler says new strains could eventually turn up. He says PED virus has been in China for quite some time.
So far, roughly 10 percent of U.S. hogs have been killed by P-E-D virus in the past two years. He says producers have done a good job with their bio security in battling the disease and need to continue that vigilance to keep the new strain from spreading.
