A state lawmaker claims the plight of Woodmen of the World underscores the need for property tax relief in Nebraska.
State lawmakers have positioned a tax break for Woodmen of the World for passage after barely overcoming a filibuster against it.
Senator Mike Groene of North Platte opposes the tax break for the Omaha-based insurance company, but understands why they seek it. . .
Senator Burke Harr of Omaha defends his measure against harsh criticism as well as the charge that no tax break should pass until broad-based property tax relief wins approval. Harr says it’s appropriate for the Unicameral to move to keep Woodmen of the World’s headquarters in Nebraska…and retain its 550 jobs. . .
Harr barely mustered enough voters to overcome a filibuster, then won advancement of the bill. It is one step away from approval.
The bill would provide an 800-Thousand dollar property tax break for Woodmen of the World.
