The Ag Land Assessment Oversight Advisory Task Force of the South Dakota Legislature met earlier this week in Pierre.

The committee has been watching the implementation of the new property tax system in the state. The process has changed over the past few years to assess ag land on its productivity capacity instead of comparable land sales.

Senator Jason Frerichs of Wilmot says they want to set up a smaller group to look at the effects of actual use over the initial soil study examples…

Frerichs says the long term averaging now used should help buffer tax changes when crop prices move up and down…

Frerichs says it will be a work in progress for a few more years…

The committee will meet at least one more time before the legislative session in January.
