Taiwan voters have rejected a renewed ban on ractopamine-treated pork, lifted ten years after one on treated beef. U.S. Meat Export Federation Senior Vice President for the Asian Pacific Joel Haggard says it was a positive outcome.
He says the real work now begins at USMEF to rebuild demand for U.S. pork in Taiwan.
Haggard says they are hopeful, but not certain about another challenge of U.S. pork in Taiwan in the future, even though very little product is produced with ractopamine.
Taiwan may still try to keep out U.S. pork with labeling and inspections to protect its large domestic pork industry. However, an extension of the bilateral trade deal between the U.S. and Taiwan is on stronger ground, which will also prevent China from moving in to seize that market.
