Survey Shows Consumers Confused About Fake Meat

A survey released last week at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association convention showed widespread consumer confusion about plant based fake meat products and the ingredients they contain. South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association President Eric Jennings says if products are properly labeled it helps consumers better understand what they’re getting.

He says most consumers didn’t understand the ingredients in plant-based or fake meat products.

Jennings says it’s not only critical to have truthful labeling but all meat products must be regulated by the same agency so consumers can make a fair product comparison.

Less than half of the 1800 respondents understood the labeling term, plant-based meat was intended to describe an entirely vegetarian or vegan food product.
