South Dakota State’s Jazzelena Black was named the Summit League Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for her performance April 6-12, league officials announced Tuesday morning.
Black captured her first career Athlete of the Week accolades after a record-setting performance at the Jim Duncan Invitational Friday and Saturday, which helped the Jackrabbits take home the team title.
In the triple jump, Black earned her second meet title of the outdoor season, shattering her previous school-record mark of 41-0.50 in the process by posting a mark of 41-08.75. With that performance, Black entered the top 50 in the nation in this event.
The junior was also part of the first-place 4×100 relay team. Black, Ashley Odegaard, Gina Fritz and Carly Carper won this event for the second time in a row, timing in at 46.52. The quartet claimed fourth in school history and was .01 of a second shy of taking third.
Black also equaled her personal record long jump mark of 19-0.75, which ranks third in South Dakota State history, en route to a second-place finish.
The last Jackrabbit to capture Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors was Mary Wirth for the week of April 1, 2014.
Black and the Jackrabbits return to action Thursday when they compete at the first of a trio of California meets.
