A recently released U.S. based study shows that a lack of bees in agricultural areas is limiting the supplies of some food crops. The study suggests declines in pollinators may have serious ramifications for global food security. South Dakota beekeeper and honey producer Bret Adee says that’s a major concern and that most crops that have had yield gains did so when bees were present.
He says one of the best steps that can be taken to enhance pollinator and bee health is through more use of conservation programs like CRP and EQIP.
Adee says responsible use of pesticides can also help enhance bee health.
Both honey bee and wild native bee populations which are important pollinators are declining.
