Strong Support for SD Hemp Bill, Despite Governor’s Objection

South Dakota is one of many states where the legislature is looking at measures to allow the growth and production of industrial hemp. South Dakota Farmers Union members back the bill. Their Lobbyist Mitch Richter says the legislation passed in the House and will now be considered by the Senate.

Governor Kristi Noem has asked the legislature to table discussions on the bill until next session. However, Richter says there’s ample time to work on the Governor’s concerns.

He says other states and Canada have allowed for growth and production of industrial hemp which should help overcome opposition to the legislation in South Dakota.

Richter says if they can get the bill passed and the rules written by the State Department of Agriculture, farmers could be growing the crop by the end of next year.
