Following a joint meeting this week between the USDA and Food and Drug Administration, it appears as if the two agencies are moving ahead with joint regulatory action for cell cultured or lab grown meats. South Dakota Stockgrowers Association President Gary Deering says his group has no policy on who should regulate lab grown product but the important thing is consumers are getting truthful information on what they’re getting.

There is no timeline reported for the regulation but Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue said it can be done by 2019. Deering says the quicker it can done the better as long as it’s done properly.

Deering says the onus is on the lab grown proponents as they have to prove their product is safe while those who get meat from their animals have already proven their safety.

Lab grown meats company Memphis Meats and the North American Meat Institute sent a joint letter suggesting a joint regulation between FDA and the USDA.
