Following the defeat of one of their priority state legislative issues, South Dakota Stock Growers Association member are monitoring a pair of bills circulating through the state legislature. While they’re call for a Statewide Country of Origin Labeling measure went down in the Senate, Stock Grower’s Executive Director Silvia Christen say they’re keeping a close eye on SB 176 which is aimed at pipeline protesters.
She says another measure they’re watching and hoping the Governor signs is HB 1068, the landowner liability bill. Christen says the legislation protects landowners from liability if someone wanders onto their property.
Christen says although the legislation they supported calling for a statewide country of origin labeling requirement on beef was defeated, they may try again next year to get something approved.
Christen says while those opposed to COOL will probably hold their position, she thinks more and more consumers and customers will demand it going forward.
