Stigma remains the real obstacle to getting treatment for mental illness, according to a social worker with the University of Nebraska.
Susan Feyen-Reay at the University of Nebraska – Omaha says society needs to develop an understanding of the scope of mental illness and the challenges sufferers face. . .
Feyen-Reay says only a few students who act out at school suffer from mental illness, but many struggle with some issue which isolates them and breeds violence. She says more health services and social workers in schools could address needs before they flare up. . .
Feyen-Reay says the schools might hold the key to better mental health treatment. She says school children need to learn early on about mental illness and how best to seek treatment.
