STC Executive Says Using Carbon Tax To Fund Infrastructure Bad Policy

Legislation’s been re-introduced in the U.S. House that would tax carbon emissions, then send 70 percent of that revenue to the Highway Trust Fund and eliminate the federal gas tax. The Highway Trust Fund is used for most infrastructure projects. Soy Transportation Coalition Executive Director Mike Steenhoek says that measure is bad policy for infrastructure funding.

He says there should be a separate policy instituted for funding reduction of carbon emissions.

Steenhoek says his group will be weighing in with the President and Congress on any infrastructure legislation they come up with.

A pair of Congressmen from Pennsylvania and California introduced the original bill in the previous Congress but it failed to gain any traction.
