The American Society of Civil Engineers report card for 2017 gives the United States a D grade on infrastructure. Some State Department of Transportation Officials say there’s a lack of funding for roads and bridges and there’s a need for dedicated and sustainable funding. Soy Transportation Coalition Executive Director Mike Steenhoek says most of the federal focus has been on spending for infrastructure rather than investing in it.
He says the current fuel tax which helps fund infrastructure has remained stagnant for 25 years leaving a massive funding shortage needed for infrastructure upkeep.
American Trucking Association officials say they support a fuel tax as a way to increase infrastructure funding. Steenhoek says they want a 10 cent increase in the fuel tax and have it indexed to inflation.
An estimate from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association says it would take more than 30 years to replace or fix the more than 55,000 bridges that are in most desperate need of upkeep.
