South Dakota horse owners are advised to watch for signs of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV). The disease has historically been found in the state and is transmitted between horses in close contact.  State Veterinarian Dr. Dustin Oedekoven says there are three forms of EHV that normally shows up.

Oedekoven says signs of the neurologic disease include: incoordination, stumbling, may have urine dribbling, have a fever and go off of feed. He says the respiratory form of EHV includes coughing, nasal discharge and breathing difficulty. Oedekoven says the reproductive form of the disease causes abortions in mares so it’s important to vaccinate.

Oedekoven also recommends that horse owners who are traveling to events should consider vaccinating for EHV. He says it’s good to check with your local vet for the proper vaccination program.
