State Senators Work on Nebraska Property Tax Fix

A group of ten Nebraska State Senators led by Senator Mike Groene of North Platte will be meeting this summer in hopes of finding a legislative solution to the rising problem of property taxes. Nebraska Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson is pleased they’re working on the issue.

Senator Groene says the group will concentrate on state school aid funding and how the funding formula can be used to ease property taxes. Nelson says that’s the key issue that must be addressed to curb rising property taxes.

Groene wants to focus on the school aid part of the property tax issue and leave any revenue questions to be dealt with later. Nelson says discussions on revenue have to be made eventually if legislators are going to solve the problem and come up with a full solution for the legislature to consider in January.

State senators failed to pass any property tax legislation this past session as they couldn’t bring together enough votes for any of three pieces of legislation to get past first round consideration.
