Friday, the group, Yes to Property Tax relief abandoned their efforts to collect signatures for a ballot measure in Nebraska calling for $1.1 billion in property tax relief. Nebraska State Senator Steve Erdman of Bayard who initially introduced legislation to relieve property taxes and supported the ballot measure says he’s more than disappointed with the group’s decision.
Erdman thinks it was the petition drive that drove state lawmakers to put property tax relief front and center of their legislative discussions this year. He says without the petition drive it could take a number of years before the problem’s addressed.
Erdman says he’ll try again next session to get a property tax relief bill passed.
Yes to Property Tax relief spokesman Trent Fellers said his group isn’t convinced the legislature will effectively implement their proposal to reduce property taxes even if enacted by the people. He says they’re exploring other options including a possible Constitutional Amendment that could withstand any legislative challenge.
