Rodney Berget was executed by lethal injection Monday night at the South Dakota State Penitentiary.
The execution was delayed about six hours while the US Supreme Court considered a last-minute request for a delay, which was denied.
The execution was then carried out, and Berget was pronounced dead at 7:37pm.
Attorney General Marty Jackley said it was a long process….

Jackley says the focus should be on the victims of Berget’s crimes..

Berget was sentenced to death for the killing of prison guard Ronald R.J. Johnson in 2011 during an attempted escape.
Johnsons widow, Lynette says her husband was the one who suffered..

Johnson asked those who are critical to keep it to themselves….

Witnesses say Berget said, “Sorry for the delay, I got caught in traffic.”
He also thanked people for their support before the drugs were administered.
