The backlog of rail cars needed for harvest in the Dakotas has not eased. Reports of how bad they are vary but South Dakota Ag Secretary Lucas Lentsch says harvest has already begun in some spots and that back log problem could worsen.
He’s advising farmers to prepare and make storage plans if needed.
Lentsch who met recently with the Surface Transportation Board says he was encouraged by that and says they’ve been responsive to the problem.
Lentsch says this long term strain on the shipping system isn’t likely to end anytime soon so he’s advising producers to adapt and be as innovative as they can be to deal with the backlog.
