Stalk rot is showing up in corn in Nebraska. That’s according to University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension Plant Pathologist Tamara Jackson (zims) Ziems who says they’ve been getting quite a few reports from farmers that have identified the disease.
She says some of the corn was stressed early on which may have led to the stalk rot problems.
Ziems says about all farmers can do to deal with stalk rot this season, but for next season they can look at prevention through hybrid selection.
Ziems says if a producer notices the stalks are soft and don’t snap back when you pinch them, then they may be susceptible to lodging. She says if that’s the case then a producer may want to harvest that corn early.
