As we finish up with March and look ahead to April, what can we expect for weather conditions as farmers hope to be busy with field work? Dennis Todey the meteorologist and agriculture climatologist with the U-S Department of Agriculture says we could see some cooler temperatures.
Todey says with the weather pattern changing from a La Nina to an El Nino it is difficult to make long-term predictions. However, he believes we may see additional precipitation either as rain in Nebraska, or as snow in South Dakota and Minnesota. But as to whether the drought is over, Todey says it may be too early in the season to make that determination.
The ag climatologist says if the snow melts quickly, then he believes farmers will still be able to work their ground in a timely manner. But he is more concerned about the cooler than normal temperatures that are expected.
