During Dakotafest, South Dakota Soybean Association along with the South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotions Council had on display various items that utilize soybeans and soybean oil.  At one time, soybean oil was thought to be a waste by-product of soybeans with limited uses.  Today, research has developed numerous everyday common items containing soybean oil.  Jerry Schmitz serves as the executive director with the South Dakota Soybean Association and the South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotions Council.  Schmitz says anything that can be made with petroleum can now be made with soybean oil.  Schmitz says the industrial new uses of soyoil were a result of soybean checkoff funded research.  Another new use of soybean oil is found in sneaker tennis shoes.  Schmitz says other industrial new uses derived from soybeans include building materials, adhesives, inks, paints, and of course biodiesel fuels.
