South Dakota soybean farmers are excited about the potential for their industry with the announcement Tru Shrimp is locating a 67-acre shrimp production harbor in Madison. The company uses soy-based feed as part of their sustainability model. South Dakota Soybean Executive Director Jerry Schmitz says they don’t know exactly where the company will source their feed, but they’ll be using 15 million pounds of soybean meal per year.
He says soy-based feed fits into Tru Shrimp’s environmental and sustainable production philosophy.
Schmitz says the South Dakota Research and Promotion Council provided early seed money for research at SDSU looking at how to adapt soybean meal for use in aquaculture rations. So, they feel like they played a role in bringing Tru Shrimp to the state.
Tru Shrimp will break ground in June and be up and running within 18 months. Luverne, Minnesota was targeted for the original harbor but the project was stunted by Minnesota law.
