The City of Sioux Falls and the South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council have partnered to apply a soybean-based asphalt sealant to streets in the city. The pilot project will include a portion of 57th Street and streets in a residential neighborhood on the east side of Sioux Falls. Council Chair Tim Ostrem says it’s a rural and city win.
The product called RePlay, applied to the surface of an asphalt road, uses soybean oil as a binding agent to add flexibility, durability, grip, and longevity to the road. It is also a bio-based product, that is a safer and cleaner alternative to other asphalt sealants.
Ostrem says the product will also help support soybean prices by creating increased demand for soybean oil and soybeans.
Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken says the street network is their largest asset and they’re looking for innovative ways to provide a sustainable and economically friendly solution to maintain it.
