A delegation representing American soybean and poultry groups is in Cuba on a trade mission this week. U.S. Soybean Export Council Chairman Jim Miller who farms near Belden, Nebraska says while Cuba isn’t a large market, it could be an important one in the future.

He says the group represents the first mission to Cuba funded by the soybean checkoff since America started normalizing trade relations with the country. Miller says the possible opening of the Cuban market comes at a good time as producers are facing low commodity prices.

Miller says it takes a lot of time to establish and open markets evidenced by U.S. efforts to get into China.

Miller says challenges to the Cuban market include the need to lift the decades long trade embargo and easing financial restrictions that hamper trade.
