South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture has adopted a new regionalization policy that will benefit U.S. poultry and egg exports. It prevents a nationwide ban on U.S. exports to South Korea if the event of a future finding of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. Instead, only exports from each affected state will be restricted. National Association of Egg Farmers President Ken Klippen says that’s great news for America’s poultry producers.
Klippen credits the South Koreans for understanding the importance of trade and adopting reasonable rules to ensure trade isn’t hampered.
South Korea was on track to become one of the biggest export markets for U.S. poultry products when the U.S. was hit by an outbreak of bird flu in 2014 and 2015. Following that, South Korea banned all poultry and egg exports from the U.S., even though only certain states were affected.
