South Dakota’s farmers are getting quite concerned with the planting delays caused by the overabundance of moisture this spring. South Dakota Corn Grower’s Association Executive Director Lisa Richardson says they are being backed up against a wall in being able to get this year’s crop in the ground.
She says they are working with the state’s Congressional delegation to see what help can be provided to producers this planting season.
Richardson says while the USDA has been trying to help growers with a second Market Facilitation Program, there’s no assistance for those who can’t plant a crop. She says the major concern is that there will be less corn acres seeded this year.
This week’s crop report showed only 25 percent of South Dakota’s corn planting complete as of Sunday compared to 87 percent at this time last year and behind the five year average of 90 percent.
