South Dakota’s winter wheat harvest is progressing rapidly and it won’t be long until growers start moving over to harvest spring wheat. That’s according to South Dakota Wheat Commission Executive Director Reid Christopherson.
He says they’re close to reaching record bushel per acre yields with the winter wheat.
Christopherson says test weights are very strong at around 60 pounds while protein levels are all over the board.
Christopherson says the robust yields can be credited to growers putting down 1 to 2 fungicides at the right time as well as strong fertilizer applications. He says all of that coupled with the proper climate conditions have led to the excellent yields.
