south Dakota’s wheat harvest is now underway with some official’s estimates saying it is nearing 25 percent completion. This year’s state wheat crop is somewhat smaller in bushels per acre yield, but the protein value is about average. Caren Assman is the executive director with the South Dakota Wheat Growers Association. She says she visited with several growers and country grain elevators to get an idea of this year’s harvest performance. Assman reviews the state’s wheat harvest from various locations. Out west, near Wall, Assman says the dry weather hurt the wheat crop in that region. Assman reports in the southern regions near Winner, the harvest is nearly half completed. She says yields are averaging about 50 bushels per acre with a 13 percent rating for protein.
