One of the summer study committees of the South Dakota legislature this year will look at county government, focusing on finances.
Yankton County Commission Chairman Todd Woods says they are in fairly good condition at this point.
The county contracts with the Yankton Federal Prison Camp and the US Marshalls Service to house prisoners, and runs a surplus because of that.
A number of counties ranging from Minnehaha to Bennett have financial issues mostly due to law enforcement and road costs.
Woods says the need always exceeds the dollars available to county commissions.
The legislatures Executive Board will meet later this month to appoint members and set meeting dates for the summer study committees.
