The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association is pleased with drought data legislation introduced by South Dakota Senator John Thune. Association Executive Director Silvia Christen says the measure corrects inefficiencies in the data collected and distributed by the USDA. She says those inconsistencies in the past hurt South Dakota livestock producers who were impacted recently by drought.

She says while USDA officials said the drought wasn’t bad enough the Forest Service made a different determination.

Christen says the needed corrections provided by the legislation makes the data more valuable as well as consistent between government agencies.

Christen says having the government agencies use the same data will make for a better and more effective program that will benefit livestock producers going forward.
