Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling is not going to happen unless the U.S. wants subject itself to a billion dollar litigation damage with Mexico and Canada. The Ag Secretary says USDA is working to develop a new program of meat labeling that would conform to World Trade Organization’s regulations. South Dakota Stock Grower’s Association President Scott Edoff says the U.S. needs to have a Mandatory COOL law in place.

He says the U.S. should not forego its own laws and be subject to WTO rules over those.

Edoff backs R CALF’s new Mandatory COOL proposal given by CEO Bill Bullard to members of Congress that contains fixes to the WTO objections brought earlier that led to the elimination of COOL. He also says the U.S. should negotiate with Canada and Mexico rather than with the WTO.

The Ag Secretary outlined his opposition to M-COOL when he appeared recently before the House Agriculture Committee.
