The South Dakota Stock Grower’s Association which backs Senator Mike Rounds State Inspection Meat Bill is voicing concern at some groups throwing up opposition to the measure. Stock Grower’s Executive Director James Halverson says the large organizations opposing the bill have the interests of the large meat packers at heart and are not backing a measure that would help cattle producers.

He says those opponents to Senator Round’s legislation are backing a program administered by the USDA which doesn’t benefit producers who need to have state inspected meat sold across state lines.

Halverson says Senator Round’s bill would help open up markets for independent cattle producers.

Halverson says state inspection programs meet or exceed USDA standards so allowing that meat to be sold across state lines as Senator Round’s bill calls for would work.
