South Dakota producers who are in the process of turning out their cattle to summer pastures should consider testing for anthrax. That’s according to South Dakota State Veterinarian Dr. Dustin Oedekoven. He says the vaccine is relatively inexpensive and easy to administer.
He says recent flooding may increase the risk of cattle encountering anthrax this season.
Oedekoven says disposing of carcasses must occur without disturbing them much as the anthrax bacteria can move from those carcasses and infect neighboring animals.
Oedekoven recommends producers work closely with their local vets when it comes to vaccinating or with any anthrax questions.
