South Dakota cattle operations have withstood the recent cold snap well. South Dakota State Veterinarian Dr. Dustin Oedekoven says many cattle producers are in the middle of the calving season, but the good news is there haven’t been any death losses reported to his office due to the weather.
He says the best thing producers can do help animals manage cold stress in make sure they are getting proper nutrition and sheltered from the wind.
Oedekoven says it’s not unusual for February to have drastic swings in temperatures and conditions, so most cattle producers are prepared for it.
Oedekoven says there haven’t been increased reports of disease problems like pneumonia either. He says cows handle this weather well if they’re adapted to it.
