The South Dakota State Fair posted solid numbers for 2016 including a slight increase in attendance at 211,371. The fair saw increased campers and numbers in the open class livestock programs and 4-H, which laid the foundation for the strong gate attendance at the fair. State Fair Manager Peggy Besch says it was a successful fair.
Correspondingly, increases in revenue were posted in several areas. Gate revenue was up 5 percent, while camping revenue was up 9 percent. Open class livestock barns were full due to increases in exhibitor numbers and entry numbers. Exhibitors were up 14 percent while entries were up 26 percent.
The Nordby Exhibit Hall opened its doors for the first time during the fair. 4-H youth development program director for SDSU Extension Peter Nielson says it was a hub for 4-H, with 8,359 entries showcased.
4-H livestock exhibit numbers were also up by 11 percent.
