South Dakota Agriculture Secretary Mike Jaspers announced today he’s leaving his position effective July 1 of this year. Jaspers who’s been State Ag Secretary since July of 2016 has accepted a position with East River Electric Power Cooperative as business development director. Jaspers says what attracted him to the Ag Secretary job is similar to what he’s hoping to do at East River Electric.

Jaspers says he’s thankful for having had the opportunity to lead the State Ag Department.

Jaspers is a native of northeast South Dakota and a graduate of South Dakota State University. He operates a diversified crop and livestock farm in McCook, Hutchinson and Marshall counties. Prior to serving as State Ag Secretary, Jaspers served in the South Dakota State Legislature from 1997 to 2005 and as State Rural Development Director from 2007 to 2008.
